the return of ten Athlone
After over twenty years, ten Athlone is back with a new album, a film-single and much more to come.

Started in the late ’90’s by Joe Vaz and original lead singer and co-songwriter, Mark Sykes, ten Athlone began life as an acoustic, indie-rock and alternative band.
In its acoustic format, ten Athlone was often compared to early Simon & Garfunkel and Crowded House, a flattering comparison to be sure.
Later with fellow musicians added for recording and performance purposes, the sound moved more towards mid-90’s grunge and alternative, with Radiohead, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins and Garbage as their biggest influences.
In its heyday, ten Athlone, and its origin band Pregnant Fridge, played benefit concerts, was a semi-finalist of Joburg Battle of the Bands (1998), had a residency at Wings Beat Bar, and played The Bassline and Roxy’s in Joburg. In London they performed The Kashmir Klub, and Covent Garden Rock Garden and headlined at The Hope & Anchor.
When Mark left the band in the early 2000’s, it initially meant the death of ten Athlone.
Now, twenty years later, ten Athlone has returned as a solo project for Joe. Writing, producing and playing most of the instruments on Travelator, released in July of 2024.
